How to say Hello and Goodbye in Vietnamese

There are several ways of saying \”Hello\” in Vietnamese.

  1. Xin chào: If you want to say hello to a group of people, in relatively formal setting.
  2. Chào + pronoun (bạn, anh, chị, em…): The most common way
  3. Chào + name: When you speak to people who are at the same age or younger than you
  4. Hi/Hello + pronoun/name: Young Vietnamese sometimes use this way to say Hello

Goodbye is \”Tạm biệt\” in Vietnamese. Tạm means temporary and biệt mean \”far from each other\”. So that means we will temporarily be far from each other.
